Is it worth it?
One of the most frequently asked questions here at Rainy Pass Repair comes after we present an estimate for a more complicated repair- “Is it worth it?”
Our customer service team does our best to research the value of goods and try to provide accurate information on how much it would be to replace versus repair an item. In certain situations, such as when an animal gets into a pack and causes extensive gnawing damage, or a tent is damaged by fire, the full repair price may exceed the value of the item. If you send something in and the repair exceeds the item value, we will gladly take it as a donation and salvage whatever parts we can for future repairs on similar items. This way you can at least recycle any items that cannot be fixed.
The one thing our customer service team cannot do is estimate the sentimental value of a piece of gear. If you love it, we will do whatever we can to fix it. If it is beyond repair, we will tell you right away. If we think it might be eligible for a warranty replacement, we will provide as much information as possible to get it replaced for you.
Alterations are another story. If you want to get an older garment altered and there are already other issues, we might advise against it. However, if you are a person who knows they will need alterations because you are short, tall, or just like a certain fit in your clothing, it is going to be worthwhile to get new pieces of gear altered right away so that you have a good fit for many years to come. For those of you out there who almost always need alterations- shop the sale rack! You can find lots of good deals at seasonal year end sales at big retailers or online stores such as Sierra Trading Post. For pants, buy a pair that fits you at the waist and we can easily adjust the length of the legs. For jackets, look for something that fits comfortably at the shoulders and we can adjust the arm length and add or remove fabric at the midsection. Remember that details such as zippers, snaps and pockets are going to take us longer to work with and can increase the cost of the alteration. We try to achieve a “factory finished” look for all alterations, and everything will be seam sealed and waterproof so the altered garments will last a long time.
Give us a call or shoot us an email with any questions you have about repairs, modifications, or alterations. We work directly with many manufacturers so we can often source matching parts and fabrics for items that are relatively new. Our talented staff is ready and willing to take on almost any custom project. The perfect fit or an extra feature might be just what you need to make your gear totally “worth it!” for many years to come.
